The roll does not end when the last remand is written. It follows the officer into the car, into the kitchen, into the hour when the robe is on a hook and the person underneath it still has the afternoon in their chest. Wellness, in this edition, has already been named as something other than a circular. This page is only the other half of that sentence: what meets you when the building is behind you, and nothing in the house requires a finding.
Buttercup — a dachshund, which is only the formal name for a sausage dog who has claimed the low wall as a bench.
Buttercup and her companion. The taller one wears a painted coat. Some faces do not need a breed to be recognised.
The jurisdiction of the front door
A magistrate spends the day in rooms where love is often the thing in dispute — contact, protection, a child who will live with an order, a person who arrived without a lawyer. The nervous system does not know that the crest has been left on the wall. It only knows that voices were raised, that a file was heavy, that a sentence had to be spoken in public. What a dog knows how to do, with no statute to assist it, is to treat the person who opens the gate as the whole of the case. There is no shortlist in that greeting. There is no acting or permanent. There is a dachshund named Buttercup, low to the ground and entirely certain of you, and beside her a taller companion whose brindle coat looks as if someone took patience and light and laid them on in layers. One of them will put a paw on the shoe you have not yet untied. The other will simply sit, and look, as if the day has already been cross-examined and found wanting, and this — the grass, the wall, the two of you — is the better record.
Why it belongs in a legal newsletter
Because sleep is part of the work, as page six already said, and because the Constitutional Court in NSPCA v Minister of Justice reminded us that animals have intrinsic value — not as decoration, and not as a joke at the end of a long roll. Because Milo, earlier in this edition, is already a living footnote on the blotter. Because a colleague who is understood at home is a colleague who can still open a door in the passage tomorrow. The science is ordinary and well settled: a hand on a warm coat lowers the pulse; a walk that has no file in it returns a person to their own name. None of that is a substitute for pay, for a working generator, or for a senior who still knows how to say come in. It is only the part of wellness that does not wait for a circular.
A working method for the walk home
Leave the reserved judgment in the building if it will still be there at eight. The dog will not mark it late.
A short walk before the news is a better adjournment than another hour at the kitchen table.
If the house is quiet and there is no animal in it, the same principle holds: something living, or someone living, that does not need you to be learned.
Keep SADAG where you can see it — 0800 567 567, SMS 31393 — and keep the lead by the door.
A note from Neelan Karikan. Authority stems from action — and one of the quieter actions is to go home and allow yourself to be greeted without a finding. Buttercup does not know section 165. She knows the gate. That is also a form of understanding.
